Tim Tebow leads comeback against the Dolphins

Broncos fans finally got their wish when the quarterback Orton was benched and Tim Tebow took to the field, and while he took some chances he definitely made some victories against the Miami Dolphins. With a final score of 18-15 the game was a shootout in every sense of the word, and with Denver missing two field goals there was certainly cause for alarm. Neither team was at the top of their game, but Tebow pulled out all the stops by running the ball at times when no one expected him to. Much like his predecessor John Elway, Tim Tebow is not against taking risks. Creativity and surprise plays have once again come into the Broncos’ game plan, and this is exciting for many fans who grew tired of the grind, and the subsequent losses. For better or worse the Broncos’ game plan has just become a lot more chaotic, and while this is fun to watch there might be some hiccups in the future. Taking risks and improvising is part of the game, but when you opt to do so for the sake of flair as opposed to victory there could be some serious trouble.

The Broncos are going to need to pull out all the stops to make this season a winner, and since bringing Tebow back into the game things will not get any easier. There is sure to be some real trouble for the team if Tebow cannot integrate himself in a big hurry, and this fact is not lost on anyone who watched the game against Miami. There needs to be a lot more effort to incorporate Tebow’s unique type of play into the game of this Broncos team, a team which is a lot more accustomed as of late to running a-typical plays. Fortunately for the team there are an … Read more »

Oakland Raider kicker Sebastian Janikowski ties 63-yard NFL field goal record

After kicking a record-tying 63-yard field goal with just seconds to go in the first half of the September 12, 2011 game against the Denver Broncos, Raider kicker Sebastian Janikowski said that was disappointed in the kick.

According to Janikowski, the field goal wasn’t kicked-well and it just barely made it over the goal post, to help the Raiders beat the Broncos 23-20 at a Monday night football game in Denver. Janikowski’s field goal gave Oakland and its new head coach, Hue Jackson, the fourth straight seasonal win over Denver, and marked Denver’s first loss in a home opener since 2000.
Janikowski, now tied with Tom Dempsey, 1970, and Jason Elam, 1998, both with 63-yard field goals, in the NFL record books, said that he kicked a 70-yard field goal in pregame practice and that the record setting field goal was not a good, solid kick.

A Polish-born former soccer player, Janikowski, a former star kicker at Florida State University, was drafted by Oakland in 2000, as the 17th overall draft pick, marking the third time in NFL history that a place kicker had been drafted in the first round. His NFL record-setting counterpart, Jason Elam, was drafted in the third round by the Denver Broncos in 1993 after a playing college football at the University of Hawaii. Dempsey, born without toes … Read more »

Adam Vinatieri Superbowl 38 field goal

Adam Vinatieri’s career kicking for the New England Patriots hit the ground running from the start in 1996. The first 10 years in NFL, he played for the Patriots, and played in 4 Superbowls, winning 3. The first Superbowl was in his rookie year and he contributed greatly to the efforts. Although the Patriots lost to the Green Bay Packers 35-21, Vinatieri managed to get a kickoff returned that broke a Superbowl record, 99 yards. This mere sample was a foreshadow to the successful career ahead of him.

This promising rookie went on to defy the elements in a blizzard game against the Oakland Raiders. Somehow, against all odds, Vinatieri single-handedly tied the game and sent it into overtime by kicking a field goal 45 yards long. The game was tied 13-13 and the Patriots ended up winning the game by a 23 yard field goal by the man of the year, Adam Vinatieri.

Keeping up with quality assurance, Vinatieri managed to give the New England Patriots their first Superbowl victory in the final play of the game against the St. Louis Rams, 20-17. Vinatieri maintains the sport entertaining and suspenseful … Read more »

Doug Flutie with a successfull drop kick for a score

One of the most significant field goal moments in history

It’s no question one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game is Doug Flutie. One of the many ways this great quarterback has made history is through the kicking he did. In a game against the Miami Dolphins, he converted a drop kick into some points during the fourth quarter. Since the 1941 NFL championship game this was the first drop kick done since then. It all began when Tom Brady was sitting out for this special game, as Matt Cassel, the backup quarterback, threw a 9 yard TD to get the score to 25-19 with 6:10 left in the game. Flutie was the number 3 choice for quarterback at the time, but came in for the extra point and took the quarterback position. He stood, concentrated and ready to make the point. Then came the snap-

Success, Yes! Doug Flutie did make the point. It was a special moment for Coach Bill Belichick, who embraced Flutie after the point, was made. The last time this happened was with Chicago’s Ray McLean as he landed a drop kick through the uprights in the … Read more »

Tom Dempsey’s 63 yard field goal the NFL record

The date was November 8, 1970. The stadium was the old Tulane stadium in New Orleans. The two opposing National Football League teams were the New Orleans Saints and the Detroit Lions.

The Detroit Lions were headed for the playoffs, but this game changed things at the last minute. Tom Dempsey, a 23 year old kicker for the New Orleans Saints was born with only two fingers on his right hand and was missing the toes on his right foot.

This did not stop him from playing for the NFL. He was able to have a special shoe fashioned for his right foot that allowed him to kick the ball. This particular shoe however, did cause some controversy because of it’s design. Many felt that the enlarged flattened end gave him an unfair advantage.

Tom Dempsey‘s response to this was “Whenever I missed a kick, nobody ever said I had a disadvantage”. The construction was only leather because Dempsey stated he “wanted it to be light”. Feeling that it was the speed of the kick that contributed to the distance of the ball. This is a great example of never allowing a handicap to stop your dream.

The score was 17-16 with the Detroit Lions leading. But in the last 2 seconds of the game Tom Dempsey from the Saints, despite an attempted block by Detroits Alex Karras, kicked … Read more »
